NGAT (Naglieri General Ability Test) – Overview

The NGAT (Naglieri General Ability Test) is used by schools to identify students for gifted and advanced academic programs. It measures a child’s ability to reason, solve problems, and think critically rather than what they’ve already learned in school. Unlike traditional tests, the NGAT focuses heavily on nonverbal and logical thinking, making it a strong tool for evaluating students from diverse backgrounds.

The stakes are high. Kids are not used to this type of test.

What Is the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT)?

The Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT) is a cognitive abilities assessment used by many schools and districts to help identify students for gifted education, advanced academic programs, enrichment opportunities, and accelerated learning.

Unlike traditional achievement tests that measure what students have learned in school, the NGAT measures how students think, reason, recognize patterns, and solve unfamiliar problems.

One of the strengths of the NGAT is its focus on reducing language and cultural bias. Depending on the version administered, many sections rely heavily on visual reasoning and nonverbal problem-solving, allowing students from diverse backgrounds to demonstrate their abilities.

The assessment may be administered individually or in groups using computer-based formats.

What Skills Does the NGAT Measure?

The NGAT includes three separate reasoning assessments.

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal section measures a student’s ability to:

  • Understand vocabulary
  • Identify relationships between words
  • Recognize verbal patterns
  • Think logically using language
  • Solve verbal reasoning problems

Strong verbal reasoning supports reading comprehension, communication, and academic learning across all subjects.

Nonverbal Reasoning

The Nonverbal section measures a student’s ability to:

  • Recognize visual patterns
  • Analyze shapes and figures
  • Complete matrices
  • Identify relationships among pictures
  • Solve problems without relying heavily on language

Because this section minimizes language demands, it provides an excellent measure of abstract reasoning and visual thinking.

Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative section evaluates mathematical reasoning rather than computation.

Students may solve problems involving:

  • Number relationships
  • Quantitative patterns
  • Mathematical logic
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Multi-step problem solving

The focus is on how students think mathematically rather than simply recalling math facts.

Paz

Hello, I’m looking for NGAT and Torrance practicing tests for 9th graders. Do you have them?

TestingMom.com

Hi Paz!
Our website supports practice for NGAT and Torrance Test for Creative Thinking for pre-K through 8th grade only. If you can’t find 9th grade level anywhere else, I would recommend you practice both at the 7th and 8th grade levels to ensure a full understanding of the types of questions you will find. The NGAT is not about WHAT you know, but HOW you think! And the Torrance Test is about your creativity – you can look up how to be creative, but our exercises will give you examples of what types of questions you will be asked and how to answer. Good Luck!

Sarah
